Is That a Fact is a graphic organizer that prompts students to investigate the difference between a factual statement and an opinion-based statement.

IMPLEMENTING THIS ACTIVITY

1. Enter in a variety of content specific facts and opinions in the template.
2. Make and distribute enough copies for each of your students.
3. Explain the directions and expectations of the activity.
• Students should begin by determining whether or not the statements are fact or opinion and record there answers on the organizer.
• Once part one is completed, students must record three facts and three opinions that are different from the statements they just analyzed.
4. Discuss these graphic organizers. Be sure to emphasize the importance of distinguishing between fact and opinion.
5. Address common student misconceptions and use these responses to inform your future instruction.
