DIRECTED PARAPHRASING: SAY IT AGAIN!

"If I supply you with a thought, you may remember it and you may not. But if I can make you think a thought "
Elbert Hubbard

OVERVIEW

In Directed Paraphrasing, students create their own definition or explanation of a concept presented in class.  The teacher synthesizes the collected data to check for student understanding and determine instructional effectiveness.

IMPLEMENTING THIS ACTIVITY
  1. Prompt students to express the definition or explanation of a concept in their own words.
  2. Categorize student responses according to the characteristics that are most important to developing a full understanding of the concept.
  3. Analyze the responses both within and across categories and note ways that you could effectively address student needs that appeared in the data.
