Proof Points…Lessons are the building blocks of instruction. Effective teachers are experts at designing lessons that help students (a.) connect knowledge they are learning to what they already know, (b.) construct a coherent structure for the knowledge they are acquiring rather than a collection of isolated bits and disconnected skills, (c.) engage students in inquiry and problem solving, and (d) take responsibility for validating their ideas and procedures (Carpenter et al., 2004).This Lesson Builder Collection consists of a variety of templates to help teachers design learning experiences that are consistent with best instructional practices. Each format approaches instruction from a different perspective that stems from the lesson’s intended purpose. In this collection you will find ideas for building lessons that target particular types of learning experiences. Some are Internet-based and emphasize inquiry; others are more amenable to direct instruction. Although each type of Lesson Builders has its own unique features, all lesson formats share a common section for teachers called the CORE Lesson Elements. Teachers will recognize that the Core Lesson Elements template includes the typical features of most lessons. Although this guide may appear to be rigid and prescriptive, teachers can and should adapt this format to their individual preferences and instructional styles. The second major module of every Lesson Builder is a For the Student section that individualize this learning experience and target its unique purpose. The Way it Works…If you have no previous experience with this type of instructional planning model, it is recommended that before beginning to work, you carefully study the different lesson frameworks found in Lesson Builder Collection. Each Lesson Builder includes materials aimed at both teachers and students. Throughout every lesson there are prompting questions that guide teachers through the curriculum development process.All curriculum materials submitted to STEMresources.com are public insofar as they are meant to be shared with a broader educational community. This public feature places a special burden on lesson authors in two ways. First, proper attribution must be provided for all materials that are adapted from other sources. Secondly, to ensure implementation, an author should take special care to include all essential elements of the lesson. Unless the package is complete, the success other teachers who want to integrate this material into their own curriculum may be hampered. Teachers have two options available for lessons that they build using the STEMresources.com tools. They can simply download their lesson and use it exclusively for their own purposes. The second option is to submit the material for review and possible inclusion in the STEM Teacher Work Samples. Any material submitted for consideration will be subject to peer review before being added to the resource collection. Classroom Adaptations…The Teacher Work Samples section of STEMresources.com include several examples of standards-based lessons units prepared by practicing teachers that incorporate these Lesson Builder templates.
